At present, it is estimated that about $500 billion is available as government grants in the United States of America, in different programs. This is why it proves to be rather difficult to look for, and obtain a government grant. However, with the right research and work, it could be possible to obtain a government grant quite easily for your business, education or to buy a new home.

The internet is the best source of finding government grant opportunities. On visiting one of the many government grant sites, you can look for grants on the website with a keyword, funding opportunity number or CFDA number (Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance). These numbers are given for specific grants and once you find the right grant program, you have to note these numbers so that you can return to these grants using these numbers.

You can also conduct a search for government grants through the 21 different categories of government grants available today. You can also search from the over 40 government agencies that offer grants. Once you find a government grant, and are provided with the CFDA number, you have to download a grant application and apply for a grant. When you receive the application, go through it and understand it thoroughly for completeness. You have to then make an application, with a very convincing grant letter. You have to state why you need the money, and what you intend to do with the money.

You then have to register to make an account in the site, wherein you will receive an approval from your organization to apply for a government grant. On registering, you can visit the site using the password and username you register yourself with. On visiting the site, you can check the status of the application with your CFDA number when needed.

One of the advantages of a government grant is that no credit checks are run on you as you don’t need a good credit score or any collateral or security for a grant. This is unlike loans where your credit score and collateral play an important part in sanctioning your loan. You just have to be a US citizen or a certified landed immigrant to avail a government grant.

Government grants are the better alternative for low income families. These families may find it rather difficult to get a loan; and if they do avail the loan, they have to repay the loan over a period of time. However, in the case of a government grant, once the grant is granted, there is no need of repaying the grant money. They can use the grant money to pay for groceries, their bills, gas,  living costs, medication, tuition fees; in fact to make life easier for themselves. Moreover, they don’t have the tension of repaying the grant money too.

Though government grants prove to be rather advantageous; it does have its share of disadvantages. The main disadvantage is that it is not available the whole year through. You can apply for it only when the government agency makes an announcement of distribution of funds. This is why you have to wait till an agency declares a government grant, and only then you can apply for one. So sometimes, you may not be able to get a government grant when you need it the most. Make it a point to register in a government grant site as you will be informed by them when a government grant is announced.
